We’re getting married

That’s right, and we are so happy to have you join us. Our wedding will be Sunday, July 1st at the Duck Inn in the town of Aquinnah on Martha’s Vineyard.

We know we didn’t choose the easiest place to get to, and since many of you have never been to Martha’s Vineyard, we set this up to help you learn a bit about the island, get some travel advice, and hopefully find a lead on a place to stay. We also have a fantasy of people connecting here regarding house rentals, car pooling, and all the rest.

Please RSVP to: kristelandmacdara@gmail.com

Hey…

If you still need lodging or transportation, please let us know right away so we can try to help.

What to wear

We think festive but not formal. Wear what you feel best in.

Most importantly, you should know that the grounds at the Duck Inn are hilly and not manicured, so wedges, flats or flip-flops are recommended (seriously). It can also get chilly out there, so bring an additional layer for after dark.

Shall we bring the kids?

Sure! The whole family is invited. If you plan on bringing your children, please know that we will have a couple super star sitters at the house to mind and entertain them. We will also have a little pizza picnic for them on the property and perhaps a late night movie. When you RSVP, please let us know if you are planning on your children attending, along with their names and ages, so we can plan accordingly.

It’s not so far

Here are a few maps of the Vineyard for you to get your bearings. Located 7 miles off of the coast of Cape Cod this 87-and-a-half square mile island (larger than Manhattan) is just around the corner from Little Compton and Buzzard’s Bay. If you are piloting boat or plane, refer to the nautical and flight book charts below.

Book your voyage early, seriously

Getting to Martha’s Vineyard can be a challenge, but we say it’s worth it. We will be arriving from NYC on Friday, June 29 and staying around through the 8th of July. We’d love to spend as much time as possible with anyone who can make the journey. After 32 years of logistics (still actively working on new solutions), here is what there is to share.

There are a surprising number of departure points from which to get on to the island. Here is a complete list of ports and another nearly complete list of airports from which you can get to the Vineyard.

Anne on islands

“How wonderful are islands! This island in space like the one I have come to, ringed about my miles of water, connected by no bridges, no cables, no telephones. An island from the world and the world’s life. Islands in time, like this short vacation of mine. The past and future are cut off; only the present remains.”

Traveling by bus or train

The bus to Woods Hole is the least expensive way get to the island. Naturally, it also takes the longest. From Port Authority New York, you can catch Peter Pan Bonanza to Woods Hole via Providence and Bourne. It takes about 8 hours to the boat. From Boston, the bus is a good option. It leaves both from Logan airport and South Station and takes an hour and a half.

Depending on where you are coming from, Amtrak may or may not be the most convenient way to go (from Philly it is a great option) but it is certainly one of the more civilized ways to travel.

Arriving by boat

Ports of Departure:
Woods Hole, MA — (travel time: 45 mins.)
Falmouth, MA — (travel time: 35 mins.)
Falmouth, MA to Edgartown — (travel time: 45 mins)
Falmouth, MA early boat — (travel time: 25 mins.)
Hyannis, MA slow boat — (travel time: 1 hr. 40 mins.)
Hyannis, MA fast boat — (travel time: 55 mins)
New Bedford, MA — (travel time: 1 hr.)
Quonset, RI — (travel time: 1 hr. 35 mins.)
Midtown Manhattan, NY — (travel time: 5 hrs.)

The Steamship Authority from Woods Hole has the most boats by far carrying people to and from the island. It is also the only method by which to take a car onto the island. Car reservations well in advance are a must. You do not need to make a reservation for passenger carriage ahead of time.

Arriving by plane

Airports to Depart From:
• Boston Logan — (travel time: 37 mins.)
• Providence T.F. Green — (travel time: 20 mins.)
• New Bedford Regional — (travel time: 12 mins.)
• Westchester County — (travel time: 1 hr. 10 mins.)
• Metro NYC Airports — LaGuardia, JFK, Newark: (travel time: 50 mins.)

Arriving by plane is certainly a luxury and can often make the most sense for those with busy schedules and traveling from farther than west of metro Philadelphia.

Jet Blue flies directly to the island from JFK and can have some good deals if you either book early and/or mid week. They also code share with Cape Air, so you can book from the West Coast all the way to Martha’s Vineyard through Boston seamlessly. The two operate out of the same terminal in Boston so transferring is as easy as walking out of one gate to the next gate.

Finding accommodations

There are accommodation options on the Vineyard to match most tastes and budgets. Let us know if you want some find some housemates. There are plenty of inns and b&bs, small hotels, houses, and even camp sites to choose from.

If you are looking for a more down to earth, self sufficient experience, consider The Martha’s Vineyard Campground on Vineyard Haven Edgartown Road or the more chill Webb’s Campground on Barnes Road.

There is also a Youth Hostel in West Tisbury, which is almost like camping.

Before you decide where to stay, take a moment to read about the island six towns. And keep in mind that we are staying and hosting July 1st in Aquinnah at the Duck Inn, approximately a half mile from the Gay Head lighthouse at the very Western end of the island.

Martha's Vineyard South Shore

One island, six towns

The island is made up of six diverse communities. There are three “down-island” towns that have bustling Main streets with shopping and restaurants and active harbors. They are Vineyard Haven, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

Vineyard Haven in known as the “year-round” town with most practical services and ferry service. Until recently it was a “dry” town, meaning there was no alcohol sold. That has changed in the past year or so. Now you can buy beer and wine at restaurants, only. Vineyard Haven is still the sleepiest of the three down island towns in the evenings since it doesn’t have Oak Bluffs and Edgartown’s tradition of playing host to throngs of carousing tourists; and it still has no liquor stores.

Getting around

You can get around the island on public transportation, bike and cab, but since the Vineyard is a largely rural 87 square miles, renting a car can be quite useful if you are going be on island more than a couple days. The best place to rent a car is at the airport or on Beach Road through one of the major rental companies. Beyond standard rentals, most places will have jeeps and mini cooper roll tops available.

This link is a good resource for car rental co’s and more.

Most taxis are vans and do shared rides. They can be silly expensive but useful in a pinch. Taxis are not allowed to pick you up on the street, so you have to call ahead unless you are at the boat or airport.
